Organization: ORL/Audiology Departments, Groote Schuur Hospital
Region: South Africa
Title: Empower Yourself
Description: To celebrate World Hearing Day, the ENT and Audiology Departments organised an awareness event under this year’s theme: “Empowering Yourself”. We set up an informational stand in the hospital’s main street, where we distributed WHO provided pamphlets on ear hygiene and hearing loss prevention. We also had posters in various local languages. Visitors were encouraged to take charge of their hearing health with free hearing screenings using the HearWHO app. Our team of ENT doctors, nurses, and audiologists was available to educate and answer questions. To attract passersby, we provided sweets and popcorn, making the event both engaging and informative. A key focus was our cochlear implant program, showcased through informational pamphlets and demonstration models provided by our local partner. The event successfully promoted hearing protection, early detection, and intervention, empowering individuals to make informed choices about their hearing health and the importance of safe listening habits.
