My-KUNNE Schools Initiative: Student-led hearing screening and education using the hearWHO app in Kano
Description:
The My-KUNNE Schools Initiative is a school-led hearing health programme implemented in two public secondary schools in Kano State to promote early identification and prevention of childhood hearing loss. KUNNE stands for Kids Using New Tools for Nurturing Ear Health in Classrooms and At-Risk Environments, while “My KUNNE” means “My Ear” in Hausa, emphasizing student ownership of hearing health.
The initiative trains students and teachers to use the WHO hearWHO mobile application for basic hearing screening and delivers WHO-approved hearing health education. World Hearing Day 2026 activities will reach 1,000 students, 20 teachers, and local education authorities. Monthly, student-led hearing health sessions will be integrated into school assemblies to ensure sustainability. The project demonstrates a low-cost, replicable model for embedding hearing care into school systems in underserved communities
