Description:
The Hearing is Not a Given Project is entering its third year in 2026 and once again reminds us that hearing care is one of the basic prerequisites for a quality life. The Jsem jedno ucho Association, the only non-profit organization in the Czech Republic that systematically focuses on hearing protection and year-round educational discussions led by people with hearing impairments, is bringing a full-day program to Ostrava on World Hearing Day on March 3, 2026. The event is held under the auspices of the wife of the President of the Czech Republic, Mrs. Eva Pavlová, who has long supported the topics of prevention, inclusion and health.
The aim of the project is to show that hearing is not a given, but a gift that needs to be cared for – and at the same time that people with hearing impairments are not an “invisible minority”, but active members of society who have something to offer. They will be the ones leading discussions during the day, sharing their experiences and opening up topics that are not usually talked about: what it is like to live with hearing loss, what barriers everyday life brings, how the environment can help and what small changes in communication can fundamentally improve mutual understanding. The authenticity of these meetings is one of the pillars of the project – the speakers are not experts “on people with hearing impairments”, but people who live this experience themselves.
The program is prepared for a wide range of visitors. The morning blocks are dedicated to schools, which can look forward to interactive educational activities, practical demonstrations and open conversations on how to protect hearing in everyday life. Thematic discussions focused on prevention, early recognition of problems and compensation options are prepared for seniors. The afternoon and early evening belong to the general public – everyone who wants to understand the world of silence, get practical information or just check whether their hearing is working as it should.
The event will also include a free eardrum check and an orientation hearing test, which can help detect hidden problems early. Prevention is one of the main messages of the project: many hearing problems arise inconspicuously and for a long time without symptoms, yet they can fundamentally affect the quality of life. A simple examination can be the first step towards a solution.
The third year of the project Hearing is not a given thus connects education, prevention, personal stories and practical help. The I Am One Ear Association is thus continuing its long-term work – bringing the world of people with hearing impairments closer to the public, dispelling myths and showing that inclusion begins with understanding. World Hearing Day in Ostrava will be a place where experts, schools, seniors, families and individuals who want to know more and do something for their health will meet.
