Asymmetric hearing loss: From impact to solution

Description:

Asymmetric hearing loss: from impact to solution

Date: 28/02/2026 09:00 – 16:00

Location: Antwerp – Thomas More University College (Sint-Andries campus)

Content

Asymmetric hearing loss is more common than we think and has a profound impact on daily functioning. The impact extends beyond auditory perception and affects work, school and social interactions. Moreover, rehabilitation in practice proves to be more challenging and the success of hearing solutions less predictable than in bilateral hearing loss.

During this study day, we will take a broad look at asymmetric hearing loss, from mild forms to Single-Sided Deafness (SSD).
You will get an overview of the prevalence, medical aspects and pathophysiology. We will then take a closer look at the functional impact and specific needs. We will explore the various hearing solutions: hearing aids, bone conduction devices and cochlear implants.

The timing of this study day is good, given that reimbursement for cochlear implantation in Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) is available in Belgium since the 1st of January 2026. The importance of good information and counselling beforehand and auditory rehabilitation will be highlighted. The results and testimonials from experts and those with personal experience, as well as the round table discussion at the end, will give you a unique insight.
