The sense of hearing is essential for the development of language acquisition, communication and emotional well-being. The auditory system ensures that we can hear stimuli, but it can be exposed to harmful agents throughout live, such as genetic mutations, problems in pregnancy and childbirth, infections, loud noises, toxic substances, etc. Generally, these system damages are irreversible and lead to chronic hearing loss, which makes it extremely difficult to communication and affects our quality of life, especially in children and the elderly.
Although there are medical devices that restore hearing, they are not indicated for all patients still have certain technical shortcomings and are economically inaccessible to many patients. Research into hearing loss is trying to find new solutions to this problem.
This problem will affect 25% of the world’s population by 2050.
