Title: Empowering Schools for Inclusive Hearing Care
Alternate tite:

Empowering schools for inclusive hearing care

Description:

We successfully conducted a school health program on ear and hearing care awareness at Gandhi School (public), Zenith School, and St. Joseph School (private) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The program educated 300 students, their parents, and 15 teachers about the importance of ear and hearing care. The sessions included interactive discussions, video presentations, PPT sessions on hearing loss, animated videos, pictorial storytelling, and social media campaigns. We used WHO toolkits to make the materials relevant.

A team of 10 trained public health students volunteered to lead the sessions. Parents learned through student-led awareness, spreading knowledge to their families and fostering a ripple effect at home. For sustainability, teachers trained in hearing care worked with student ambassadors to continue awareness efforts. This approach helped ensure parents became more informed about ear and hearing care.

Impactful Story:

A bright and obedient student, XXX, failed her exams, leaving teachers and parents puzzled. Despite being good at reading, she struggled academically. Her family performed cultural and religious rituals, but no solution was found. During a school health program on hearing, we introduced the HearWHO app and encouraged students to test their hearing. XXX’s score was only 20, indicating possible hearing impairment. A professional evaluation was recommended. Out of 350 participants, 10 students and teachers showed signs of hearing issues. This event raised awareness, promoting hearing care and the HearWHO tool within families and the community.
