Changing mindsets: Empowering communities to make ear and hearing care a reality in Geita

Description:

On March 3rd and 4th, 2025, the Foundation for Revive Community Hope (FRECHO) launched the groundbreaking initiative “Changing Mindsets: Empowering Communities to Make Ear and Hearing Care a Reality in Geita” at Nyankumbu Girls Secondary School. This two-days event redefined hearing healthcare by integrating screening, treatment, education, and policy advocacy, directly impacting 1,500+ people and reaching over 20,000 individuals through media engagement.
With an innovative, multi-layered approach, the event provided:
i. 248 individuals with hearing screenings, identifying 18 cases of hearing loss (mild to profound hearing loss) and 41 earwax-related impairments, which were treated on-site.
ii. 1,300+ students and 44 teachers trained on safe listening practices and early detection of hearing issues.
iii. 12 policymakers and 100+ community members engaged in discussions on sustainable hearing health policies.
iv. A digital advocacy campaign via WhatsApp, Facebook, and Storm FM radio, reaching 20,000+ people.
We make ear and hearing care a reality.

Impactful Story:

For months, I had trouble hearing clearly. I couldn’t understand my teachers in class or hear my friends properly. In our community, there were no doctors nearby, and some people believed hearing problems were caused by evil spirits. My family couldn’t afford medical help, so I kept quiet about it.

Then, on World Hearing Day, FRECHO came to Nyankumbu Girls Secondary School and offered free ear checks. They found that ear wax had built up and was blocking my hearing. After cleaning my ears, I could hear perfectly again! I’m so thankful to FRECHO for this life-changing service.
