Title: World Hearing Day 2025 Seminar (Targeting Department of Education)
Alternate tite:

World Hearing Day 2025 seminar (targeting Department of Education)

Description:

Creating awareness and commemorating World Hearing Day according to the World Health
Organisation theme is vital. Commemorating this day plays a role in creating awareness about the
effect of hearing loss which is associated with speech and language delays, Dementia, lack of social
bonds and poor schooling and employment outcomes. This year’s theme is “changing mindsets:
empower yourself to make ear and hearing car reality for all”.
The department of education in Madibeng, South Africa depends on Brits District Hospital to assess, diagnose and
treat their learners with potential hearing loss. For this year’s commemoration we decided to
host a seminar in the Brits District Hospital Conference room on the third of March 2025 where we
presented to teachers and officials from the department of education on the background of the hard of
hearing child, the challenges they would have faced by the time they enter the formal education
system, the challenges they face in the education system, how they can be assisted at school and
how we as the Brits District Hospital Audiology unit can contribute.

Primary site: AFR – South Africa

Impactful Story:

The department of Education in the North West Province, specifically the Madibeng municipality has one school that caters for hard of hearing learners. In the municipality only one audiologist is available. The aim of the seminar was to capacitate teachers and conscientize education officials on the signs of poor hearing, classroom based support, contextual background, procurement of assistive devices and available hospital support for hard of hearing learners. The impact of seminar is that opportunities for collaboration are now being utilised with educators and officials directly communicating with hospital audiologists regarding referrals and assessments as well as assistive device enquiries.
