Organization: National Association of Parents of Deaf Children (NAPADEC)
Title: Empowering Families and Communities for Inclusive Hearing Care and Early Intervention
Alternate tite:
Empowering families and communities for inclusive hearing care and early intervention
Description:
Aligned with the World Hearing Day 2025 theme, “Changing Mindsets: Empower yourself! Make ear & hearing care a reality for all!”, NAPADEC conducted an awareness activity in Nama Sub-County, Mukono District. The initiative focused on advocacy, empowerment, and early intervention, targeting parents, school children, and the community.
The event gathered 65 parents, 50 school children, teachers, and community leaders. WHD flyers and T-shirts were distributed, and the message for global parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children (GPODHH) was translated and shared. A key moment was the chief guest’s testimony about his son’s hearing loss, reinforcing the need for awareness and advocacy.
Though social media engagement was limited due to costs, the activity successfully promoted inclusive hearing care, empowered parents, and strengthened community support.
Primary site: AFR – Uganda
Impactful Story:
“I never thought much about hearing loss—until it happened to my son,” the chief guest admitted. He revealed, for the first time, that one of his sons has hearing loss in one ear, while the other lives with autism. His family had felt helpless and ashamed, unsure where to turn.
Hearing parents’ and teachers’ testimonies, he realized no parent should face this alone. “We must change our mindset, support early intervention, and advocate for inclusive hearing care. Decision-makers must prioritize those with limited voices.” His words deeply resonated, inspiring parents, teachers, and leaders to take action.
