World Hearing Day

Description:

The Department of Speech Pathology & Audiology conducted two activities as part of the event:
1. Public Awareness Program: Audiologists engaged with the public in open spaces like parks through interactive sessions. They showcased images related to ear care and hearing healthcare devices, conducted Q&A sessions to assess awareness, and performed an educational street play to promote hearing health.
2. Workshop on Early Identification of Hearing Loss for Anganwadi Teachers: This interactive training session included orientation and role plays to equip Anganwadi teachers with essential skills to identify early signs of hearing loss in children and understand referral procedures for timely intervention.
Activity 1:
The public awareness program started with students of BASLP having an interactive Q&A session with the general public. Images of hearing devices like Body Level hearing aid, Behind the Ear hearing aid and Cochlear Implant Processor were showcased. It was observed that many people were unfamiliar with these devices and their benefits.
To enhance public understanding, an educational street play was performed after the Q&A session. The play effectively demonstrated common hearing-related issues, the significance of early diagnosis, and the role of hearing aids and cochlear implants in improving quality of life. Through this engaging approach, the audience gained valuable insights into hearing health and the importance of seeking timely intervention.
Activity 2:
Dr Usha M welcomed the guests and other members present at the event and explained the significance and theme of the World Hearing Day.
All the dignitaries lit the lamp.
Dr. B. Vengamma, Vice Chancellor, emphasized the importance of early identification in hearing health to the Anganwadi teachers. She highlighted how timely detection of hearing issues can significantly improve communication abilities and overall quality of life. Following this, Dr. Muninarayana Registrar spoke about the significance of early intervention. He explained that prompt management of hearing loss, especially in children, plays a crucial role in speech and language development.
The inauguration session concluded with the release of a flyer on the care and maintenance of hearing aids, aimed at providing essential guidance on proper usage, storage, and troubleshooting of hearing devices.
The workshop was conducted by Mr. R. Bharath from the department, focusing on hearing health and wellness from infancy to adulthood. He explained the signs and symptoms of hearing disorders across different age groups and emphasized how teachers can play a vital role in early identification of hearing disorders in children. The session highlighted the significance of early intervention and the impact it can have on communication, learning, and social development.
