Alternate tite:

Hearmi Ghana World Hearing Day 2025 celebration

Description:

HearMi Ghana apparently planned celebrating WHD 2025 with the Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service but their tight schedules and late information made us quickly shift the event to School of Hygiene, Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa in collaboration with the ENT Nurses in Volta and Oti Regions.
The program started at 9:00am with intense education on causes of hearing loss, safe listening practices and other ways to prevent hearing loss.
A total of twelve ENT Nurses and 2 Clinical audiologists attended to over 200 Students and Staff of School Of Hygiene, Ho.
We conducted otoscopic examination, diagnosed and treated basic otological problems.
They also benefited from Pure Tune Audiology and Tympanometry.
We first of all assessed their level of knowledge, built on it and gave the intense education. We received questions, provided the needed answers. We again assessed their knowledge level after the education and realized we have made loads of impacts. They apparently do not know the effect of exposure to loud sounds. They also got to know of the need to avoid removing ear wax with a-tips etc.
At the end of the exercise, 67 students and staff had cerumen impaction, 14 had fungal infection of the ear, 2 of them had remains of cotton part of q-tip stuck in the ear without them knowing.
6 of the students have sensorineural hearing loss. All affected benefactors were treated and others referred to the Ho Teaching Hospital for further management.
I made a bold statement calling on Government to enroll Ear and Hearing Health onto the National Health Insurance Scheme fully because most citizenries are unable to afford ear and hearing health making our efforts so challenging because they do not report to hospital early for treatment on ear and hearing problems resulting in complications and that’ is worrisome.

Impactful Story:

A lady who is benefactor of our WHD event at School Of Hygiene, Ho, Ghana- West Africa approached me and said she was in Senior High School when we celebrated our WHD event some years ago at Akatsi College of Education. Her mother was and still a lecturer there so she brought her for ear and hearing assessment because she could not hear well even though she wasn’t a student of the college.
We assessed and realized she had bilateral cerumen impaction. It was irrigated and now she advises her colleagues against that because her hearing was restored since.
