Description:

In celebration of World Hearing Day, a group of instructors and students from Taibah University coorganized an awareness event with King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, highlighting the importance of hearing health and its strong relationship with communication development.

The activity included several interactive stations designed to educate visitors about the anatomy of the ear, the importance of hearing protection, and strategies for preventing hearing damage. We discussed the different types of hearing loss and provided a hearing loss simulator to help participants experience how hearing impairment may affect daily communication. Educational brochures were distributed, focusing on hearing protection, the importance of early detection and intervention in children, and the impact of hearing on language acquisition, academic performance, and social interaction. Informational banners emphasized noise protection and the common signs and symptoms of hearing loss.

In addition, we conducted hearing screenings for infants, children, and adults. Although the event lasted only two hours, nearly 40 individuals attended and expressed positive feedback regarding its organization and educational value. Visitors participated in short quizzes and received hearing-related gifts. We also showcased handcrafted products created by talented individuals with hearing impairment and distributed bookmarks illustrating the connection between hearing and reading development.

The event successfully raised awareness about the critical role of hearing in communication, literacy, and overall quality of life, reinforcing the importance of prevention, early identification, and timely intervention.

Impactful Story:

An inspiring highlight of the event was the story of an 18-year-old girl , Weam Algaidy, with hearing loss who uses a cochlear implant. She creates handcrafted candles, draws portraits, and designs accessories for cochlear implant users to help them feel confident about their devices. Showcasing her work demonstrated resilience and creativity.

The audiology students also showed outstanding dedication and care. They warmly welcomed visitors, conducted screenings, and explained hearing health with confidence and compassion. The experience deepened their appreciation for audiology and reinforced how their knowledge and empathy can positively impact individuals with hearing loss and their families.
