School hearing screening
Description:
In March 3rd 2026, the Hospital Universitario Dr. Agostinho Neto held a celebration of World Hearing Day by holding extra activities for paediatric audiology attendees, involving 30 students with bilateral permanent hearing loss.
First, we did their hearing evaluations; four of them who already use hearing aids, so we helped them to complete hearing aid maintenance as well.
Four children had bilateral wax obstruction: staff were able to do a thorough ear wax removal procedure, to help to maximise their hearing thresholds.
Next, the group and staff spent some time in a question-and-answer session, explaining ways to support a friend with hearing loss, asking and answering questions about deafness.
We feel that such group activities and information sessions can be very useful for children with hearing losses – helping them to manage better and feel more connected.
