Description:

The World Hearing Day activity in Chibombo District was organized to raise awareness about ear and hearing health and to promote early detection of hearing problems within the community. The activity was implemented as part of global efforts led by the World Health Organization to highlight the importance of preventing hearing loss and ensuring access to hearing care services.

The activity involved community sensitization, hearing screening, and school outreach programs targeting both children and adults. Community members were educated on the causes of hearing loss, prevention strategies, and the importance of early hearing checks. Educational talks were conducted in schools and health facilities to promote healthy hearing practices.

Hearing screening services were provided to community members and school learners to identify individuals with possible hearing difficulties. Those found with suspected hearing problems were counselled and referred for further assessment and management.

The activity was implemented in collaboration with local stakeholders including the District Health Office, schools, community leaders, and health workers. Schools that participated in the activity included Ipongo Primary School, Chiyuni Primary School, Mushingashi School, and Muundu School and Ipongo Secondary school. 534 pupils where screened from across 5 schools for ear and hearing conditions, 30 pupils with wax impaction where referred to the local clinic for ear irrigation, 4 with chronic suppurative otitis media to Beitcure Children Hospital for possible tympanoplasty and 10 who complained of have some reduced hearing to Mwachisompola district for hearing assessment and further management.

Impactful Story:

Alice Munkombwe , a grade 5 pupil at Ipongo primary school, who has been experiencing pain and in the left ear for 4 months, on ear examination during the ear and hearing school visit in commemoration of the 2026 world hearing day, It was discovered that she has a foreign body in the left ear( cotton from the cotton bud), a cotton that was stack in Alice’s ear was removed . “Ndalumba pakundigwasha ndalipengede” (Thank you for helping, I really suffered) are the words she used to thank the team. ” The relief from pain was all over her face.
