Peppa Pig and World Hearing Day: Raising Deaf Awareness
Description:
In February 2026, Hasbro announced that Peppa’s brother George is moderately deaf in one ear. He will now wear a hearing aid and a series of TV and online episodes will follow his hearing loss journey.
Introduction of this storyline so close to World Hearing Day was an important step toward creating a world where anything is possible for deaf children – a world where differences are celebrated and every deaf child feels seen, valued and included.
The National Deaf Children’s Society worked closely with the Peppa Pig production team from the earliest stages of development, advising on the portrayal of deafness, different types of hearing loss and appropriate support, to ensure the storyline reflects the lived experiences of deaf children and their families.
To raise awareness of the signs of deafness and what parents can do if they think their child might have a hearing loss, National Deaf Children’s Society also produced resources and tools for parents, deaf children, and the general public as part of the partnership, including materials targeted towards both UK and international audiences.
On World Hearing Day, Deaf Child Worldwide – which is part of National Deaf Children’s Society – published a Bond blog on ‘Why Peppa Pig and World Hearing Day have something in common’ (https://www.bond.org.uk/news/2026/03/why-peppa-pig-and-world-hearing-day-have-something-in-common/) harnessing the momentum of George’s storyline to highlight why childhood deafness matters, the importance of early screening and family-centred early intervention, and why now is the moment to take action on childhood deafness.
Also on World Hearing Day, National Deaf Children’s Society announced that Daddy Pig would be running the 2026 London Marathon (https://www.londonmarathonevents.co.uk/london-marathon/article/daddy-pig-run-iconic-tcs-london-marathon-support-national-deaf-childrens) to raise money and awareness for childhood deafness.
By partnering with the world of a beloved children’s show, Deaf Child Worldwide and National Deaf Children’s Society elevated World Hearing Day’s call to action to advocate for early identification of hearing loss.
