World Hearing Day 2026- Hearing Screening
Description:
To mark World Hearing Day 2026, the Malta Association of Audiologists and the Gozo Association of the Deaf will organize a public hearing screening event aimed at promoting awareness of hearing health and encouraging early identification of hearing and ear-related conditions. The event will be open to members of the public aged 8 years and above and will focus on accessible, preventative hearing care within the community.
The event will offer free hearing screening and otoscopic ear examinations conducted by qualified audiology professionals. These procedures are non-invasive, safe, and suitable for both children and adults. The primary objective is to identify potential hearing difficulties or ear health concerns at an early stage, particularly among individuals who may not have previously accessed hearing care services.
Hearing screening will be carried out using standard screening procedures to assess participants’ ability to detect a range of sounds. This screening is intended as an initial check rather than a full diagnostic assessment and will help identify individuals who may be at risk of hearing loss. The screening process is brief and designed to be easily understood by participants, ensuring a positive and informative experience.
In addition to hearing screening, otoscopic examination will be provided to allow visual inspection of the ear canal and tympanic membrane. This component of the event aims to identify common ear conditions such as excessive cerumen, inflammation, infection, or other abnormalities that may affect hearing. Otoscopy also supports accurate interpretation of hearing screening outcomes and provides valuable insight into overall ear health.
Participants will receive immediate verbal feedback on their screening results. Audiologists will explain the findings in clear and accessible language and provide individualized advice on hearing health, ear care, and hearing protection where appropriate. Participants who require further evaluation will be advised to seek a full diagnostic hearing assessment or medical follow-up through appropriate healthcare services.
The event is designed to support the goals of World Hearing Day by increasing public awareness of the importance of hearing care across the life course. By offering services to individuals aged 8 years and above, the event highlights the significance of early detection, healthy listening habits, and timely intervention in preventing avoidable hearing loss.
Through this initiative, the Malta Association of Audiologists and the Gozo Association of the Deaf aims to reduce barriers to hearing care, engage the community in meaningful health education, and contribute to broader public health efforts aligned with World Hearing Day 2026. The event will serve as both a screening opportunity and an educational platform, empowering participants to take proactive steps toward protecting and maintaining their hearing health.
