Mobile health services on Raas Island

Description:

The title of the activity is Infant Hearing Screening as Part of a Mobile Health Service Program, conducted in collaboration with the Government of East Java Province in the Raas Islands.

This activity aims to ensure that every baby born in the region receives hearing screening equivalent to that available to infants in urban areas. The examinations were conducted using the Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) method, an objective, non-invasive, and rapid screening tool that is highly suitable for infants aged 0 to 6 months in field settings.

The three-day implementation of this program is expected not only to generate data on the prevalence of early hearing impairment in the Raas Islands, but also to raise awareness among the community and local healthcare workers about the importance of early detection and appropriate referral pathways for infants requiring further medical follow-up. This report documents the implementation process, findings, and recommendations resulting from this collaborative effort.

Impactful Story:

The Raas Islands, which are administratively part of Sumenep Regency, East Java, represent one such region facing geographical challenges. Distance and transportation remain major barriers for communities seeking access to specialist healthcare services on the mainland.
Recognizing this gap, Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, through its Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ENT-HNS), has taken an active role in promoting equitable healthcare access. In collaboration with the East Java Provincial Health Office under the framework of the Mobile Health Service Program, Dr. Soetomo General Hospital organized an infant hearing screening initiative in the Raas Islands.
