World Hearing Day celebrations

Description:

I. Academic Seminar Series: The Burden of Hearing Loss
A series of scholarly forums were conducted to bridge the gap between clinical research and public health policy:

BPS Medical College, Sonipat: This seminar focused on the WHO “Make Listening Safe” initiative, examining the intersection of modern technology and lifestyle choices. Discussions emphasized the escalating risk of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and the critical role of community-led advocacy.

Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College, Karnal: Held on October 3, 2025, this session addressed the socioeconomic implications of untreated hearing impairment. Experts advocated for the seamless integration of ear care into national health policies and emphasized universal early screening.

N.C. Medical College & Hospital, Panipat: This forum highlighted the preventability of modern hearing loss. It specifically targeted the risks associated with improper personal audio device usage among the youth, promoting the adoption of “Safe Listening” protocols.

Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC): A specialized scientific program was conducted to enhance clinical competencies. It provided intensive, hands-on training in advanced diagnostic modalities, including BERA, VEMP, and VNG.

II. Community and School-Based Screening Initiatives
Direct interventions were implemented to facilitate early identification and provide clinical referrals:

Bhaikaka University, Gujarat: Launched an innovative, integrated health program for adolescent girls, addressing co-morbidities by combining anaemia control with hearing loss awareness and identification.

School Screening Programme, Daryaganj: Comprehensive screenings were conducted at SKV Dayanand and SKV Bulbuli Khana, reaching 222 female students.

Clinical Findings: Significant pathology was identified, including a 26.2% prevalence of impacted cerumen (ear wax) at SKV Dayanand. At SKV Bulbuli Khana, nearly 38% of students reported symptoms of otalgia (ear pain), pruritus (itching), or tinnitus.

Action Plan: Impacted students received recommendations for professional wax removal and formal ENT referrals for symptomatic management.

III. World Hearing Day 2026 Observances
In March 2026, MAMC and Sound Hearing 2030 executed a multifaceted outreach campaign aligned with the theme “From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing for All”:

Educational Engagement (March 5, 2026): Students were briefed on the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) to foster a generation of ear health advocates.

Public Outreach & OPD Screening: A sensitization drive in the ENT OPD area educated the public on ear hygiene and preventative care. This included live demonstrations of the WHO hearing test application and the distribution of evidence-based educational materials.

Collaborative Health Camp: In partnership with the National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (NIHFW), Munirka, a dedicated ear and hearing camp was organized, successfully screening approximately 200 participants.
