Improved hearing in school
Description:
The large Kansas City Kansas school district in Wyandotte County, Kansas installed in 2024 Audio enhanced speaker systems throughout the district’s schools. Every classroom has one that includes a teacher and students microphones and three high quality speakers. Generic research on these systems suggest when fully utilized the amplified curriculum can lead to a 10% on average increase in students academic performance and especially improve the listening quality for students who use hearing assistive technologies (HAT) including hearing aids, Cochlear Implants and Bone anchored hearing aids (BAHAs). Unfortunately not all teachers utilize the system due to blue tooth pairing issues and unfamiliarity with the technology.
Some members of the Special Education Department are promoting the evidence based upgrade training and sensitization campaign as part of World Hearing Day activities. A special orientation for teachers is under planning for the upcoming school year when we hope to find at least 85% of all teachers routinely utilizing the hearing enhancement system. The school system routinely univerally screens annually for ear and hearing difficulties,
