Transforming lives through hearing: expanding access to inclusive care in Guatemala

Description:

As part of International Hearing Day, the Benemérito Comité Pro Ciegos y Sordos de Guatemala, a non for profit organization, in partnership with Rotary Club Guatemala Vista Hermosa and thanks to funding from the Rotary Foundation, donated hearing aids to 13 students from the Committee’s inclusive education centers.

In addition to this donation, free hearing evaluations were provided across the 8 hospitals of the Benemérito Comité, expanding access to essential audiological care.

Beneficiaries were selected based on their audiological diagnosis and socioeconomic status. Students will receive ongoing technical follow-up to ensure proper use of the devices.

This initiative aligns with the World Health Organization’s theme: “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.”

This donation is part of a series of initiatives scheduled throughout the year, through which we aim to provide hearing aids to more than 1,000 people, including batteries, follow-up, support, and rehabilitation services.

Pleased with the results achieved through strategic partnerships and the positive impact reflected in students and their families as they gain access to hearing aids, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting access to hearing health and inclusive education.

Impactful Story:

Jazmín, aged one year and ten months, was born with congenital hearing loss. Her parents, a hardworking family in Guatemala City, sought support early and connected with the Benemérito Comité Pro-Ciegos y Sordos de Guatemala. Through its holistic programs, she received specialized care, rehabilitation, and guidance. Due to financial constraints, hearing aids were out of reach—until strategic partnerships made them possible. Today, with assistive devices, early stimulation, and speech therapy, Jazmín is strengthening her development. Her story highlights how partnerships are essential to expand access, transform lives, and help break the cycle between disability and poverty.
