Doctor of Audiology (AuD) graduate students in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana USA are offering a free hearing screening event for faculty, staff, and community members on World Hearing Day – March 3, 2023. As part of the SLHS 570 Hearing Conservation course curriculum, Clinical Assistant Professor Anne Sommer, AuD has challenged students to engage in a variety hands-on advocacy efforts delivering hearing loss prevention education. The AuD students are collaboratively organizing World Hearing Day awareness events including a social media campaign featuring the “Purdue Pete” mascot highlighting the 2023 World Hearing Day theme to “make ear and hearing care for all a reality.” Other World Hearing Day events include the AuD students distributing free hearing protection earplugs while gaining valuable clinical education experience providing 1on 1 training on the proper fit and use of various hearing protection devices.
