Title: Empowering Slum Communities in Mbarara City: Kizungu and Kajogo Slum Areas for Better Hearing Health-Changing mindsets For a Healthier Future.
Alternate tite:

Empowering slum communities in Mbarara City: Kizungu and Kajogo slum areas for better hearing health-changing mindsets for a healthier future.

Description:

Our event aimed to raise awareness about hearing health in the Kizungu and Kajogo slum areas of Mbarara City. Through targeted community outreach, we reached over 400 residents and boda-boda riders. Health talks at Kizungu Market and Kajogo Playground educated participants on ear hygiene, recognizing hearing problems, and accessing care. Interactive sessions with boda-boda riders addressed the risks of prolonged noise exposure and provided practical noise-reduction strategies.

Collaboration with local leaders ensured strong community mobilization, while partnerships with health facilities facilitated hearing screenings and referrals for those in need. Informational flyers reinforced key messages. The event successfully raised awareness, encouraged behavioral change, and identified individuals requiring further care. By engaging local stakeholders, we established a foundation for long-term efforts in promoting hearing health and preventing hearing loss in the community.

Impactful Story:

Tom, a 29-year-old boda-boda rider in Kizungu, attended our World Hearing Day session on noise-induced hearing loss. Inspired by the discussion, he visited a health facility for a check-up and reflected on his habits. Tom realized he had been excessively honking and spending long hours in noisy environments. Now, he can avoid unnecessary noise and encourages fellow riders to do the same. Tom’s story shows how education can spark awareness and lead to positive behavior change, protecting hearing health for himself and his community.
