Health service: Education and ear cleaning together with the Indonesian Blind Association

Description:

The World Hearing Day 2025 event, titled “Hearing Health Education and Ear Cleaning,” was successfully held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the Pertuni Medan Hall. This event aimed to raise awareness about hearing health and provide ear cleaning services for visually impaired individuals. The activity was organized under the responsibility of Dr. dr. Devira Zahara, Sp.T.H.T.B.K.L., Subsp.Oto(K), M.Ked(ORL-HNS) (Dr. Devira Zahara, MD, PhD, ENT Specialist, Otology Subspecialist) and was conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Blind Association, Medan Branch.

The event consisted of two main activities: hearing health education and ear cleaning services. Participants were given important information on how to maintain ear hygiene and prevent hearing problems. The education session was designed to be interactive and accessible, ensuring that visually impaired individuals could fully engage and benefit from the information shared.

A total of 70 visually impaired individuals participated in the ear cleaning session. The medical team identified 25 cases of cerumen impaction and 2 cases of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Those requiring further treatment were given appropriate medical advice and referrals. This initiative helped address common ear health issues that often go unnoticed in the visually impaired community.

Overall, the event was well-received and provided significant benefits to the participants. It not only improved their ear health but also increased awareness of the importance of hearing care. The collaboration between medical professionals and the Indonesian Blind Association demonstrated the importance of inclusive healthcare initiatives. Below are attached photos documenting the activities conducted during the event.

Impactful Story:

Ari, a blind musician, struggled with muffled hearing for months. Conversations became difficult, and his beloved melodies felt distant. When he attended the World Hearing Day 2025 event at Pertuni Medan Hall, doctors discovered severe earwax blockage. After a simple cleaning, Ari’s world changed—sounds became crisp, music vibrant. He smiled as he strummed his guitar, hearing every note clearly. Alongside 69 others, he learned the importance of ear health. Thanks to Perhati-KL Sumatera Utara, Ari regained not just his hearing, but his confidence. The event proved that clear hearing means a fuller, richer life.
