Title: Empower yourself to HEAR for life!
Alternate tite:

Empower yourself to hear for life!

Description:

The hearX Foundation organised several World Hearing Day events from 3 to 7 March in underserved communities in South Africa, including Atteridgeville (Pretoria), Khayelitsha (Cape Town), and the Paarl Valley region (Mbekweni, Paarl East, and Wellington). These in-person awareness events reached a total of 2,032 individuals, with 387 receiving hearing screenings using mHealth-supported digital devices. In collaboration with hearX Group, the University of Pretoria, Clinton Health Access Initiative SA and various community partners, we engaged five target groups: preschool and primary school children; high school adolescents; older adults; civil servants and the general public.
We conducted tailored hearing awareness sessions for each target group using WHO materials. Young children participated in a colouring competition featuring a hearing protection message, while adolescents engaged with the ‘Music Lovers’ and ‘Gamers’ key messages and received hearing protectors. The general public also received hearing protectors with a focus on hearing protection. Civil servants were educated on how to be hearing loss friendly and received badges. Additionally, hearing screenings were provided to preschoolers, adolescents and older adults, with follow-up care ensured where needed. Our social media awareness campaigns engaged an additional 2146 users.
