World Hearing Day 2025: Strengthening community linkage – QMMC hears out Barangay Escopa, Quezon City

Description:

The Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery celebrated WHO’s World Hearing Day 2024 with a whole-day affair of hearing screening and showing of audio-visual presentations on proper ear care and prevention of hearing loss for both hospital employees as well as members of a nearby community (Barangay Escopa). The event helped forge partnerships with the surrounding community for advocating ear health and prevention of hearing loss. This event was headed by in-house Otology consultants Dr. Erasmo Gonzalo DV. Llanes and Dr. Jenna Marie C. Quiroga with the help of the Public Health Unit officers Ms. Emeline Ann Olis Dolotina and Ms. Marcel Naida S. Nicolas.

Upon entry, ear examination was done for all participants. Each participant then proceeded to the initial hearing screening utilizing the HearWHO application on smartphones and tablets. Final hearing screening was done using manual screening audiometers (pure tone audiometers). Short video clips of proper ear care and prevention of hearing loss were shown on loop throughout the event for all participants to watch while waiting in line. Results for both the HearWHO application and pure tone audiometry were compiled at the last station.

A total of 45 participants from the Barangay Escopa community attended the morning session of our hearing screening while a total of 41 participants from our QMMC employees attended the afternoon session of our hearing screening to celebrate World Hearing Day.

Summary of the results of the HearWHO app are as follows:
53% of the Barangay Escopa community and 73% of the QMMC Employees scored 40 on the HearWHO app interpreted as “needs further testing”
6% of the Barangay Escopa community and 27% of the QMMC Employees scored 50 on the HearWHO app interpreted as “for regular checkup”
1% of the Barangay Escopa community and none of the QMMC Employees scored 70 on the HearWHO app interpreted as “normal”

Summary of the results of the pure tone audiometry are as follows:
Among the Barangay Escopa community, 22% had normal hearing, a majority (40%) had mild hearing loss, 27% had moderate-severe hearing loss, 1% had severe hearing loss, and none with profound hearing loss. The rest of the Barangay Escopa participants had impacted cerumen and were scheduled for ear cleaning instead prior to pure tone audiometry.

Among the QMMC employees, 32% had normal hearing, a majority (61%) had mild hearing loss, 7% had moderate-severe hearing loss, and none with severe or profound hearing loss.

Celebrating WHO’s World Hearing Day through a hearing screening program for both hospital employees and members of a nearby community was a good way to continue health promotion activities in the community on ear and hearing health care.
