Title: Eliminating preventive causes of hearing loss
Alternate tite:

Eliminating preventive causes of hearing loss

Description:

We carried out ear and hearing screening for Paralympics under kids athletics in Jinja followed by basic training for both teachers and their students. Our training focused on safe listening and management of otitis media at a school level. There were 128 students in Paralympics with 31 of their teachers that benefitted from our event.

We went a head to carryout the second event in Masaka City in central part of Uganda where we did advocacy among the parents and students of Lions Club nursery and primary school with much support from Lions club ,Masaka. We covered 546 patients in this event. It was a great opportunity to collaborate with other health care workers because they learnt some of the ways of managing ear complications within the public outreach model. We made many referrals to the national hospital and regional referral hospitals attached to ENT specialists.

Primary site: AFR – Uganda

Impactful Story:

There was a hopeless elderly man of 69 years of age(Joseph) who disassociated himself from public after realizing he had lost his hearing. When friends realized he had lost his hearing , they led him to the hearing health camp in Masaka City and we carried out an assessment , only to find impacted wax! After wax removal from one ear, we saw a brighter face with a great smile and he couldn’t hold it within him until he shared that he had started hearing. His hearing was completely restored after complete wax removal from both ears.
