Title: Hearing Awareness and Screening
Alternate tite:
Hearing awareness and screening
Description:
We did an activity targeting the following target groups, aged, diabetic and hypertensive patients. The activity involved two aspects, ear and hearing awareness as well as screening. Patients were first seen by an ENT Specialist for outer ear assessment, for patients with minor challenges such as ear wax impaction were cleaned, for ear infection medication was applied and follow ups were referred to the ENT respective clinic. Patients with more complicated cases were referred for further investigations and intervention.
As for the hearing assessment, only pure-tone Audiometry was performed testing the following frequencies: 0.25Hz, 0.5Hz, 1KHz, 2kHz, 4kHz.
The Patient’s information are as follows:
– Patients tested: 91 patients
– Number of ears tested: 182 ears
– Gender Differentiation: 41 Male and 50 Female
– Average Age: 42 years
The hearing screening summary is as follows:
– Normal Hearing: 38 ears
– Mild Hearing Loss: 74 ears
– Moderate Hearing Loss: 25 ears
– Moderately Severe Hearing Loss: 23 ears
– Severe Hearing Loss: 8 ears
– Profound Hearing Loss: 9 ears
– Total Deafness: 5 ears
Patients with hearing loss were then counselled by a team of Audiologist and hearing aid trials were done. Hearing aids were programmed before the activity for different degrees of hearing loss, the mild and moderate degree had a hearing aid trial from one device. The moderately severe and some level of Severe had trials on a pair of hearing aid. For Some severe and Profound HL had a trial on a preprogrammed super power hearing aid. The purpose of the trial wasn’t to obtain the perfect fitting but to make the patients aware of the difference after being exposed to digital hearing aids.
