Title: A new approach from citizens of the town of Gorgonzola
Alternate tite:

A new approach from citizens of the town of Gorgonzola

Description:

This event featured a presentation on the Angelo project, an open-source, accessible device aimed at supporting individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. Highly relevant to the themes of World Hearing Day, the project highlights the significant global challenge of untreated hearing loss, which the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies as an invisible disability and the world’s third leading cause of disability. Presenters drew upon data from the WHO World Report on Hearing, noting that 1.5 billion people globally had mild to moderate hearing loss in 2019, with 80% residing in low and middle-income countries. Angelo is designed for ease of assembly and affordability, costing approximately €30-€35 for materials. Available online via the “Angelo amplifica emozioni” website (https://angelo-amplifica-emozioni.jimdosite.com), the project fosters community involvement and seeks widespread diffusion, especially benefiting populations emphasized by global health initiatives like World Hearing Day.

Primary site: EUR – Italy

Impactful Story:

Some attendees, after the event, later visited the makerspace to learn more, test the device further, and propose adjustments based on their needs. This participatory approach—enabled by community spaces like makerspaces—shows how accessible technology, shaped by user input, can meaningfully enhance communication and quality of life for older adults, in line with World Hearing Day goals.
