The West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) actively participated in a stakeholder engagement seminar organized by the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, Ghana, on Monday, March 4, 2024, to climax this year’s World Hearing Day. The seminar served as a platform to share insights and foster dialogue on pertinent issues surrounding hearing impairment, particularly focusing on genetic investigations within deaf families across Ghana. During the seminar, the WACCBIP team, under the leadership of Dr. Lucas Amenga-Etego (Head of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Unit, WACCBIP) delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting the findings from systematic genetic investigations conducted on deaf families across Ghana. This presentation aimed to provide valuable insights into the genetic aspects of hearing impairment, fostering a deeper understanding among stakeholders. The team initiated crucial dialogue on genetic testing policy considerations in newborn hearing screening, addressing pressing issues and potential strategies for implimentation.
