Title: Ear Care and Prevention of Hearing Loss Amongst Secondary School Children
Description: On March 2nd and 3rd, 2023, our team conducted an educational session for 320 students and 20 teachers in Enugu South LGA, Nigeria, focusing on ear care and the causes of hearing difficulties amongst a group of 12-20 year olds. This effort indirectly influenced approximately 1,500 people in nearby communities. The evaluation showed that 70% of the participants underwent screening, with 36% showing conductive issues such as wax build-up (21%), foreign bodies (8%), infections (5%), and perforations (2%). No cases of sensorineural deafness or speech deficiencies were found. 37% of the participants were referred to the ENT department of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) for further evaluation. Treatment was not given during this event, however, every participant received the appropriate counseling. Our team is grateful we had this opportunity to serve our community.
