Organization: Deaf Leadership International Alliance (DLIA)

Project title: Changing Mindsets: Empowering Parents through Deaf Adult Connections in the US (Eastern)

Primary region: AMR

Country: United States of America

Event Description:

Deaf Leadership International Alliance (DLIA) will hold a Zoom session for parents with Deaf* children to connect with Deaf adults.

Meeting Deaf adults can be a transformative experience for parents of deaf children. It challenges misconceptions and expands possibilities. By connecting with Deaf adults, parents gain firsthand insight into Deaf culture, language, and identity. These interactions help shift mindsets from fear to empowerment, allowing parents to see their child’s potential in a new light. Deaf adults serve as role models, offering lived experiences, strategies, and encouragement that hearing professionals alone cannot provide. When parents embrace these connections, they gain confidence in raising their child. Empowered parents create empowered children, ensuring a future where their child thrives.

*The term Deaf refers to people with varying hearing levels and is inclusive of hard of hearing, Deaf-Blind, and Deaf+ individuals, as well as people with hearing assistive technology.
