Organization: Audicare and Dangerous Decibels
Project title: Dangerous Decibels & World Hearing Day
Primary region: EUR
Country: Portugal
Event Description:
Research indicates that children and young adults are getting hearing loss from sound levels found during common activities like listening to music and playing games with earphones or attending concerts and sports events. This can be prevented through educational intervention. Dangerous Decibels is an evidence-based educational program that will be delivered by Dra. Katya Freire and Prof. William Martin to grades 5-9 at St. Julian’s school. This hands-on, interactive program has been proven to be effective at improving safe listening behaviors in this age group. The three educational messages of the program are: What are dangerous sounds?; What are the consequences of listening to dangerous sounds?; How do I protect myself from dangerous sounds? To celebrate the WHD, 96 students will receive the program in 3 groups. Each of the 3 sessions will be approximately 50 minutes. Students will receive free earplugs and instruction on proper fitting during the event.
