Title: Deaf awareness

Description:

A one-day deaf awareness event was conducted at the University of Toronto Schools, attended by students and a staff gave a presentation. The event highlighted World Hearing Day through three interactive stations. The first station was ‘Non-musical chairs’, showcasing the potential for adapting activities to include the deaf. The second was an ‘Empathy activity’, managed by a deaf teen, that simulated a conversation with a hard-of-hearing individual, challenging participants to decipher the intended message. The third station involved an activity that emphasized reliance on senses other than hearing, wherein students had to guess conversations with their eyes closed. The event was well-attended, with 100-150 students participating and enjoying complimentary snacks. To promote the event, posters, including those from the World Health Organization, were displayed across the school, and emails were sent out to students and staff.
